I have a 9.8 Tohatsu 4 stroke. The rubber gasket / seal around the bottom edge of the hood / cowl that goes around the engine no longer sticks to the inner surface of the hood.

A year or so ago I tried to reaffix it with some sort of marine glue (I forget which) but it did not stay adhered.

Is there a brand of glue that will? Or is there a better method (screwing or rivetting it to the hood)?

Yep, It's 3M Yellow Weatherstrip Adhesive(Autozone $6/tube)...it's right up there with duct tape, JB Weld, SuperGlue, Tie Wraps...can't live without it!
Good Luck!

Re: What glue/adhesive for rubber gasket engine cowl/hood

I tried the 3M Yellow Weatherstrip Adhesive on the top cowl seal of my 9.9 Mercury and it worked great!

One question though, is there a difference, other than the obvious, in the yellow vs the black?

Does the black work just as well?

Has anyone tried the black and have an opinion?

I am thinking that by using the black it may look a bit better next time...

Thx!

The 3M Yellow Weatherstrip is great stuff and I've used it with success for lots of applications, but I notice that yamaha uses stainless steel staples to attach theirs. It may be a challenge to glue a neoprene rubber item permanently to a fiberglass cowling, considering the water, heat, cold, oil, gas, etc. Maybe keep an eye on it if it starts coming loose. I've never used the black but I could not live without the yellow, "gorilla snot" adhesive!:)

The factory adhesive used on the strip is petroleum soluble....Scrape the old adhesive off, clean the cover and the strip with MEK and then use 5200 to re-attach it. We use Hypalon inflatable boat glue to do it, but the 5200 should last years.

Thanks. Black does not work. Tried it and gave up. Does not adhere to the foam adhsive strip if its still intact nor does it adhere to the fiberglass or plastic cowl. Will try the yellow 3M. Is the original foam adhesive strip available?

The black works just as well as the yellow, put it on the seal, put the seal in place then immediately remove it, wait about 20-30 seconds and remount the seal. one thing, clean the gluing surfaces (both the seal and the cowl) really well with something like acetone
