Re: what gas gauge do i need
Before you change the gauge look up how it is tested. You'd be surprised how often electrical components get blamed when it's not their fault.
If you have a Mercruiser there is all the info in the world available in the sticky post at the top of the section. I'm not familiar with other brands but I bet they are similar.
On mine I tested the gauge, it was good, I tested the sender it was bad. After I changed the sender I still had a ground fault. After I fixed my grounds everything worked. My guess is the ground fault may have contributed to the demise of my sending unit.
On the other hand, if you already know the gauge is junk, can you remove the sender from the boat and check it with an ohm meter? Or can you inspect the sender for any marks? It could have an ohms rating value stamped or printed right on there.
You are being smart to figure out what you need ahead of time. Good luck!
