I ski with my Left foot forward while salome skiing and I'm right handed. Is this normal or am I weird. This feels the most Comfortable for me.
What foot normally goes forward? Does it depend if your left or right handed?

The real reason I'm asking is because I will be teaching my kids Salome skiing and want to teach them the right way.

Most right handed people ski left foot forward.

Here's how we've always figured it out when teaching new skiers. Stand with your arms down to your side, feet together. Lean forward enough so that you're falling down.....whichever foot you step forward with to catch yourself is your dominant foot....put that in front. It's worked every time and if you ask slalom skiers to do it, they will come up with the same result. I've only seen once where the guy caught himself with one foot, but skies with the other in front.....and he doesn't ski very good....lol

Yup, or just have them stand feet side-by-side and tell them to take a step forward. Most of the time, the'll use that same dominant foot to take their first step. I'm left-handed and ski right-foot forward. I have gotten up and can ski in either stance, but feel much more confident/comfortable with my right foot forward when carving/cutting hard.

Slalom is spelled with two of these: "L" and none of these: "E"

Variation on the foot test is to give the unsuspecting subject a push from behind to see which foot they use to catch themselves. Most right handers are LFF forward. I'm right handed but ski RFF. 40 years of leading with the right. I'm not about to switch.

While we're at it, there is a "correct" way to grip the ski handle. (one over and one under the handle is a stronger position than a double overhand grip). Think of holding a baseball bat out in front of you. RFF skier should have left hand on top. LFF skier should have right hand on top.

I didn't get that right either. :)

Using the over/under grip also allows the handle to flip the right direction if you release one hand while making a hard cut back to the wake ....ex) rounding a buoy in a slalom course. If you use both hands with your knuckles up, the handle is turned the wrong direction on one side of the wake or the other, making it much harder to regrip it when you try to grab it with your off hand.

Re: What foot is forward "Salome"

Back in my skateboarding days, I put my left foot forward (right handed), using my right foot to propel the board, steer and other control stuff.
I carried that stance forward to slalom skiing.
I think it's pretty normal for a right handed person to ski left foot forward.
I think that's how surfer's stand as well. They call the opposite stance "Goofy foot".

I think the reason I slalom with the LFF is because I got used to having my LFF when delivering a bowling ball. There are probably other activities where foot placement offsets the dominant hand.

At the end of the day it's whatever is comfortable. My son writes with his right hand, and kicks a football with his left foot.

My dad is a left handed hockey player and a right handed golfer.

I'm a lefty golfer and hockey player, but I'm right handed.

Takes all kinds.

When I started 30 years ago my dad told me to put the foot I kicked a football with forward, I'm right handed and have my right foot forward.

Which is contrary to how most people choose the forward foot since that may not be your dominant foot. As with anything sports-related, if you ski with a certain foot forward enough times, eventually it will start to feel natural. Like I mentioned earlier, I feel little difference swapping which foot is forward when getting up on a deep water start; when I start carving hard, that's where I feel the uneasiness due to the shift in weight and stance.

I'm also a right handed, left foot forward kind of guy.

I'm not sure why I use my left forward. I've had some pretty nasty ankle and knee surgeries on that leg, so I think it would be weaker. Maybe that is why.. I tend to lean back and put more weight on my right leg. I might be "favoring" my right leg, even out on the water.

Going out to the lake in about 45 minutes for some quiet lake skiing.
I think I'll give the single ski thing a try- it's been a couple decades.
We'll see if I favor my right foot back or front.

Well when you slolam, your back leg is the one with most of the stress/weight. The front foot is used more for positioning/weight transfer. Your leg with the poor history is the one with less stress in this case.

"Slalom" has two vowels. The first one is an "a".

I disagree with putting most of your weight on your back leg. Soften those knees and keep the weight split more evenly on both feet. Keeps the tip down and more ski in the water for better edge control. :)

Re: What foot is forward "Salome"

Which foot you put forward is a personal choice. My LFF choice was because that was how I rode a skateboad before learning to ski. Skibrain is right on with his last comment. I put (about) equal weight on both feet. Also use the over and under grip when slaloming and combo skiing. But, when I ride on my feet, both hands are over and I keep the handle lower than normal.

Your strongest leg is in the rear.
