I have read that coking is a problem with 3 ring pistons.
What is it, why does it form, and what can I do to avoid or cure it?
Why is it not a problem with 2 ring pistons?
Does this mean that 3 ring pistons are inferior?
What are the pros and cons of each?
Thanks in advance.

Coking is a term that is used to describe carboning, most of the problem is caused by inferior oils not the number of rings on a pistion. You will seldon ever see it in engines using OEM oils

Too add:
and motors propped to be within their proper WOT RPM range. If you are turning 4500 RPMs at WOT you WILL get carbon buildup.
