Re: What ever happened to Suds?

I just helped a buddy with a purchase of a 256 SSi. Wish I had read this first. Anyway, my problem was definitely with the dealer. I recommended to my friend that he needed closed cooling as he wants to run in the Pacific a lot. They tried to talk him out of it and told him that I was full of it. They went so far as to tell him it wouldn't fit. They said they had the parts but were waiting for an adapter before they could confirm the fit . . . There is no adapter . . . I kinda sneaked into their shop and measured, got the drawings from Volvo (8.1) and knew immediately they were lying, and one of their techs said they were still waiting for ALL of the parts. They told my friend that they had disassembled and they were waiting for the "adapter" still. When I looked at the boat there were no wrench marks on any of the related hardware. I persisted and they added it (my friend paid full pop for the change).

It just amazes me. The guy was willing to pay for it, it was the right thing to do and they just lied and stalled and lied some more. Why? Makes no sense to me and I have worked in a truck dealership . . . If people want stuff, and you are in that business, don't you like that?

I bet they just did not have the experience to do it with any confidence. Do your friend a favor. Check all the screw clamps, slide on of the hoses, etc. I would really check it good.

Good advice cyclops. They didn't want to sell it, cause they don't know how to install/service it. And they figured that they'd sell him a new engine in a few years too!

Yeah, I climbed all over it after. Helped him with the maiden voyage. They actually did a decent job. Runs the right temps and no leaks so far. It isn't even that difficult. Who knows? I can't figure it out.

BTW, Merc makes CC standard on the 8.1, not sure why they would do that unless they thought it was necessary . . .

I thought they did that cause they were using aluminum heads, like in the trucks. But I think they use iron heads, so I don't know exactly why they do it. However, a more constant engine temp is never a bad thing ( unless that temp is a constant 300!)

They would HAVE to go to a closed system with iron block and a Aluminium head. That causes a battery in salt or brackish water. Also known as Galvanic action that can not be stopped.

I agree with you TilliamWe. Confusing.
