Hi guys; I know this sounds like a strange question but I just bought another boat for lake fishing and although the boat and trailer are superb the engine has me puzzled +++++

It says on the lid it is a Volvo Penta 140 (Outboard).

Model Number is 3174

Serial Number is 1004932

It has two small cylinders and is tiller operated. (I suspect the 140 refers to cubic capacity; but in my befuddled state can't work out an approx hp to go with that anyway!!)

I have done Google searches and contacted Volvo Penta direct; but no-one seems to be able to tell me the age (I suspect 1974 year of manufacture) or the actual horsepower (including the previous owner!!)

Volvo Penta pointed me in the direction of a company called emilsson motor in Sweden for spares!! (no website found so far!)

The engine is also marked Monark Crescent.

What the hell have I bought?
Don't mind scrapping it, but my curiousity is getting the better of me; and no, I haven't had it running yet as I have the 'flu at the moment and this is first day outta bed since buying the boat.

If anyone can help me identify this motor I'd be very very very grateful!

All I can tell you is that it is very common to find Volvos, I/O's anyway, on Monark boats. I've heard of these Volvo outboards before, but have never seen one. Monarks are generally very well built. Owned one many years ago with a Volvo diesel I/O. I'm interested to see what you find out about that outboard. Good luck.

Sounds like what is known in Norway as "Archimedes-Penta" , the 140 refers to it as 14HP (rated at the crank)

The excellent swedish boat rag "Vi Båtägare" have had several articles on older outboards like the Penta's , you could try e-mailing one of the editors , anders@ttg.se , and ask if he can help you out with more information.

Thanks guys; it is becoming more obvious by the minute that this engine will make a very good anchor!
I have struggled out of sickbed and tried to start it; fuel pump diaphragm has decided to revert to original molecules! Great spark at the plugs and will fire and run briefly with fuel squirted into the bores; great compression too!
Anyone wanna buy a second-hand Volvo Penta 140?? lol!
