Okay here are the symptoms and my tests.

175 Mariner 1988

Idles fine, idles in gear but WILL NOT go above 2krpms. It will just bog down, which I now know is a flooding condition.

we have run a few on the lake tests.
each carb is getting fuel
new gas
each cylinder is getting spark. kind of hard to test while under a load.
Squeeze bulb does not help
spray fule mix directly into carb.. no change
pinch off gas line.. it will just run dry and stall.
plugs are very wet when I take them out.
I jetted down... main and idle.. no help

What does the switchbox do?
If I have a bad switchbox will the boat run okay idling around the lake but not work under a more advanced load?

Does the switchbox help to produce stronger spark as the motor advances?

I'll be glad to get a new one and see if it works but i'd like to go on more than just a hunch.

I'm

Simply, the boxes have 2 functions, 1 they receive the AC voltage from the 2 high and 2 low speed windings and with the help of the trigger which advances and retards the timing direct it to the coils as each cyl come near TDC. If you have a failure in the ign. it is probably the high speed windings in the stator.

Re: What does the Switchbox do Troubleshoot

Thanks, so assuming that everything is in check

gas
air
spark
compression

if my boat will idle, drive in gear at rpm's lower than 2k
but will not accelerate over 2k rpms without bogging out

the switchbox is not a likely part problem.

you think I should look at the stator?

It's probably the stator but heres the complete test for the system.

Permanently

Photobucket shut down its free pix hosting site, torpedoed lots of topics on forums across the internet, not just here.
