Just wondering what the SPL stands for, as in 88hp SPL, or 90 SPL or 115 SPL? Searched everywhere with no luck, and what makes it different than any other Johnson outboard?

I cant tell you what SPL stands for but as I understand it, these are non oil injected models... You premix the fuel and oil.

Yep, SPL stood for Special. They were offered with fewer features. In addition to lacking the oil injection, they often lacked power trim, and had less fancy cowling graphics. In later years, they were often the "old tech" models alongside a newer tech motor of the same horsepower, .ie the old crossflow 88 being offered at the same time as the newer 60-degree looper 90s. Basically, they were made to hit a price point below the premium models...

Awesome, I have a 97' 115 spl, it has tilt and trim, and pretty much everything all the others have. No oil injection, and pretty straight forward graphics.....but all together seems like a good motor. Still working with it and getting it lake ready though. VERY EASY TO WORK ON SO FAR.

The (Special) SPL motors were awesome. You have tilt and trim so that makes it even better.

The tilt and trim was not standard on those special engines (to hold cost down,) but many were purchased with that feature. The special engines were identical to the larger engine. For instance the 90 powerhead (carbs, etc.) was used for the 88.
