What does a carb float do exactly?

I know it has to do with fuel level, but more specifically.

The reason I'm asking is that I'm rebuilding the carbs on my Evinrude XP150 and the one I just tore down had a float drop of 1 3/8". The book calls for 1" +/- 1/8".

What kind of condition would that cause.

Thanks
Brian

PS, is vacuum line ok to replace the small lines that run between the carbs and the manifold and the carbs and the primer switch? They look just like vacuum line, but I would think fuel would go through some of those.

Not enough float drop might cause insuffient float valve needle and seat opening, resulting in starvation at high speed. Too much float drop isn't a big deal unless it's so great that the needle wedges and sticks in the seat.

Don't use vacuum hose. Some of it won't stand gas. Fuel hose is plentiful, so why take a chance?

So, this probably wasn't a big deal?

As for the hose, the parts store didn't have the smaller in fuel only vacuum. I'll find somewhere else. I was just going to replace all fuel line while I was at it. I found the main line and it's all replaced.

Thanks for the response.
