What do you think about this?

Out of sheer morbid curiousity, I'm interested in what kind of general gas mileage my boat gets. It has a 100 gallon tank and I rarely fill it completely so checking it that way isn't really an option. I was thinking....

I have a 6 gallon portable tank. What do you think about putting exactly 6 gallons of gas in it, then disconnecting the main fuel line right before the primer bulb, capping that off, and hooking the portable tank to the engine. I would then go out and using my GPS see how many miles I make it at typical operating conditions untli the portable is empty.

Will this hurt anything? It's a 1997 Evinrude 200 with the good old VRO2. Would use straight gas, not premix, in the portable.

Thanks!

wouldnt hurt a thing, especially since you have oil injection and not pre mix.

have fun, post back with results

I'm wondering if I really want to know or not..... :D

As the motor is running out of gas, it's still pumping full oil. There is a good possibility that you'll end-up with about a 50/50 gas/oil mix in the carbs before you're done. Drain them into some rags and prime before refiring. That's the only problem I'd anticipate. Be prepared for a lot of smoke for a bit.

Re: What do you think about this?

What would you gain by knowing ;) If it comes out good , you'll be worrying about spending a fortune on a new powerhead cos the old one got lean burned. If it comes out bad , you'll be pricing a new outboard by the end of the day. Then comes the " Well honey , the new motors are much more economical than the old ones and that will cover the cost of the repayments" followed some time later by " Yes I know I've been out fishing three times this week but I'm determined to get the use out of our investment" ... :D

I'd rather run the numbers and see how efficient it is. If you have 20% slip, you know it could be better.

Re: What do you think about this?

I would run the full 6 gals and see what milage you are getting. Otherwise you may be lugging around a lot more gas (and weight)in the 100 gal tank all the time for nothing. Less weight = better performance. It helps elimate stale fuel situations too. Only problem I see is a 200 Ocean Pro will easily suck down 100 gals in a day so knowing the cruising range is your most important concern.

Flow meter = $$$.

I think I won't run the 6 gallon tank dry to be safe. But I do want to know the mileage for the reason BillP states, so I know what I need to carry for the longer trips I'm going to take. When the tank gets low I'll stop and switch back to the inboard tank, then measure exactly what's left in the portable when I get back.

DHadley, I can tell you that I get about 5600Rpm WOT, which results in about 39MPH with a 15X19 SST OMC prop. Last year you might remember you helped me out a bit and advised me to raise my engine, which I did. I'm at the top hole now. I also purchased a Ballistic SST 15X19 but that cut my performance pretty drastically, WOT dropped to 5000 and holeshot went out the window. So I gave that prop to my dad and stuck with my stock OMC SST.

Thanks!

Re: What do you think about this?

You mean 49 mph, right? Not 39.

Re: What do you think about this?

To me the only downside of your plan is running out of fuel. I don't necessarily think it's harmful, but a big hassle. You'll be out on the water and have to either switch the fuel line to the main tank, prime and re-start. If you have oil injection, there could be excess oil issues making re-start difficult. I'd suggest like you said, running partial, down to what you think is around .5 to 1 gallon left. But you still have to mess around, out on the water, with re-connecting your main tank. Or carry 5 gallon jugs to refill the auxillary tank, and be able to measure how much you're putting in. Then you have a full 6 gallon tank again. Eventually you'll have to either run it dry or dump it into another container, which is always a hassle with a boat tank.

I think you're making a pretty big hassle just to avoid filling the big tank. Why not just fill the big tank for once? (actually twice). Run as many gallons as you can, the more the better for this test; I'd go at least 10-20, better yet 2-3 hours of running. Then re-fill and measure useag. Longer test period will minimize the error due to not topping off the tank exactly both times. A gallon error is pretty insignificant with a 3+ hour test, but is significant if it's just an hour test. Do this early in the season and you'll burn the gas eventually anyway. That's what I do - I wouldn't want to do the spare tank deal if it involved actual hose rigging like you describe.

On the other hand, I installed a flow meter just for this purpose! (it IS handy and I recommend it, but not "critical"). I have a Standard Horizon FF41, but it's the same as the ones put out by Navman and Faria. I use it to ameasure fuel flow every time I run my engine- but most of my running is far away from home on remote rivers and I often have to carry spare fuel, and dont' like to run out of fuel in a tricky spot. I also use it to adjust my RPMs to maximize not GPH, but MPG (I use a GPS for speed).

Yes, just another gadget costing about 1.5 Boat Bucks.

Re: What do you think about this?

I don't get what the problem is with running the 6 gal dry...the amount of wear at idle speed without fuel/oil is miniscule to non existant in this situation...known "distance on tank" is better to me than mpg but if that is a concern fill the 6 gal and mark the edges with half gal increments. Run it down 4 or 5 gals at cruise speed and switch tanks.

Re: What do you think about this?

No DH, 39mph GPS. 23 foot wellcraft weighing in at about 4500. 200 HP. Did see 43MPH once but that was running with a river.

Re: What do you think about this?

Thats over 25% slip. Something has to be wrong. You sure youre not going faster than 39? Even 43 is over 20%.

Are you sure you have a 19" SST? If you have a 15 or even a 17 everything would make more sense. especially the part about not being able to spin a Bull-istic 19.

Re: What do you think about this?

GPS says 39. I referenced the 6 digit number on the prop last year, and it came up as a 14.5X19 OMC SST. I'll pull the prop and double check it tomorrow. 99.8% sure it's a 14.5X19.

If it is a 14.5X19, what could I start looking at as far as the slip goes?

Re: What do you think about this?

You don't have to run it dry. Just fill the portable tank to some noted position (or just fill it) and run half of it out. Take the miles you went divided by the amount it takes to refill the tank and you have your number. Just like a car.

The amount in the portable tank does not matter so long as you can measure to the same point. So filling it would be close enough. You might get 6.2 gallons in it, but so long as the line it fills to is the same both times, thats all tha matters.

Lets start with verifying the prop size (pitch).

DH, 14.5X19, stamped on the hub.

I have other problems now (see my post in boat questions and topics if you want to) but please do give any suggestions you may have.

Thanks again!

Re: What do you think about this?

I wonder if someone reworked the prop?Maybe
knocked down the pitch a little.Im no expert but find it hard to believe the same size Ballistic would knock 600 rpm off WOT.
