I've never run an I/O of any kind before. I found this one right here on iboats. I know how to check out the boat part of it and I know to do things like check the compression on the motor. I don't know anything about the actual out drives or how they work and tilt, but have worked on several outboards.

I like old boats and this one would suit my fishing needs as far as how it's set up. Its a couple hours drive for me and I wanted to see what you guys thought bedore I decide to go look or not.

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/marine_classifieds/adv-search.cgi?id=43651-ad

Re: What do you guys think?

Beware of the OMC Stringer drive... if you are new to stern drives, it is probably not your best choice. I'm going to try to avoid sparking the OMC reliability debate and suggest that you search 'omc stringer' on this board and draw your own conclusion.

For the record, I have very few problems with my stringer drive, but I consider myself very lucky!

that's my two cents... :)

Looks like a very clean boat for the age, but I would also be leary of the early OMC drives. However, $2500 is not alot of money for a boat. You will most likely be able to resale the boat for that amount or close to it after a few years of use if you so desired

It looks to be an electric shift. They shift with a decent bang and don't kick you in the butt too much, but when they break they can be expensive. Check gear oil for milkiness, you should find four seperate cavities,1.upper 2.lower 3.intermediate 4.tilt gear housing.
Check the condition of the rubber boot that stretches between the drive and transom.

No power trim that I can see.

Does anybody know what kind of engine that is?doesn't look ford, looks chrysler.Maybe find out and see what parts availability is for that engine.
There's my.02 Good luck :D

That's a Good Looking old boat........
But, $2500. is about $2000. more than it's Worth.....
Both that old Stringer drive,+ the old Buick motor, Are Really Less than Disirable..........
If it runs Forever, Good.....
When it breaks, It's going to be a Nightmare.....
If you plan to keep a boat for a long time,
Stay Away from both these motors,+ Drives......

hello
runaway runaway
your purchasing a nightmare
if you buy this rig your first and last born will never make it to college. your gal may leave ya.
trust me.
no power trim. electric shift, 5 to 600 dollar steering cables cause they are no longer produced. the electric shift was problematic at best. the water pumps take an act of god to acess and need periodic replace ment as do the ball gears. ball gears are anywhere from 180 to 300 if you can find them. that motor has not been a production item since about 73 or so and wasnt very popular then. your buying a nightmare. for 2500 you can get a later mercruiser or OMC cobra.
good luck and keep posting

Shop around a little more. You will find a better boat for the same money.

I would have to say buying this unit for any sum of money will be a mistake, and future disappointment.

Re: What do you guys think?

Thanks for the replys guys. I did quite a bit of reading on the OMC Stringer stuff and have decided not to even look at it. I look at a boat like a tool. If it works like its supposed then I don't have any fishing interuptions. If it doesn't then it gets in my way. I don't mind working on a rig that's worth it, but my time on the water is limited enough that I want some thing known to be dependable. I'll keep looking and stick with my Merc 500 for now.
