Hey there been away for too long. Ok here is my question my friend has an 84 18 hp merc. It starts fine cold trolls fine cold and WOT fine cool. Once it seems to heat up there is a drop in speed as he says it seems like hes losing power and has dropped a cylinder. Then the problem will resolve itself and off he goes until it happens again. He has said that the cord had become a bit tougher to pull once the engine heats up. Pulled the plugs changed them but now he says it makes a "crackle sound" I think that sound is unrelated as the plugs might not be gapped right. Anyway Im thinking coils hes thinking stator what do you think? What diagnostics can be done to determine it. I asked if it was a fuel delivery issue. He said a marina checked it and said it was either coils or stator. Good buddy but sorely poor on cash. I figured Id ask my guru friends here so what do you think.
