Ouch. Glad no one was hurt.
Came close myself last summer. Fortunately the admiral pointed out that a heron was standing ankle deep just ahead to port.

I guess most folks have run up on a sand bar or oyster bar at least once, especially in tidal waters.

I use those ripples to clean the old paint off my skeg when I'm ready to repaint it.

Re: what do those ripples mean

came across a stuck boat that was in about the same shape as that one last week. Bowrider, 2 guys, 2 girls. When I pulled up they had been stuck and trying to push for at least 10 minutes. Or should I say one guy. The three other passengers were just sitting down waiting for the captain to shove it out.

So anyway, pull up, and i pretend to shove a little bit with the other guy, boat doesn't even budge. FINALLY the rest of his passengers, well, all except one of the women, get the hint and hop out. Once they did that, the boat was floating!

moral of the story, toss all dead weight overboard and THEN push! holding down the stern isn't going to help..

So whats the rest of the story with the pic? Any damage? Get if off OK?

Re: what do those ripples mean

Been there - done that. Was fishing a tidal creek in Savannah. When I went into the creek (high tide) I noticed this little stick some one had jammed in the mud. Had about three inches out of the water. Well about 4 hours later I was looking at this little stick (now 4 feet out of water) when it occurred to me WHY THEY PUT IT THERE. I said Oh Sh--! motored up and tried to get out of there. Short trip. went aground - by the time the tide went out I was about 2 - 3 feet out of the water. Had to wait until the tide came back in. Felt like an idiot. All I could do was wave at people as they went by. Looking back it was very funny. At the time not so much. ON the plus side, I was able to dig up some real nice conch on the sand bar I was stuck on.

How did the lower end survive that. Looks more like the tide just went out.

We were coming in from the bay to our slip and as I turned into the sun, I said to my wife... "I can't see s**t!" THUNK. Grind grind.
Right over the sand bar that we pass everyday, coming and going.

A few (more) nicks in the prop and nice shiny skeg.

Re: what do those ripples mean

My wife and I were out-running a squall Thursday--black clouds, green sky, thunder and lightning--and I had to cross a big shallow area; just underestimated where it started until the bump reminded me. All's well that ends well.

But it can be bad: a guy from my area was driving a sport fisher, maybe 35', on a plane in the marked channel. He was in the flying bridge. The boat slammed a sand bar in the channel--yess it happens a lot--and he was thrown off the bridge, onto the deck and was killed by the fall.

The title of this thread reminds us: learn to read the water. The information you need is often there.

I'd much sooner hit sand then rock anyway.
Out around here there are some really nasty ones you need to know about, poorly marked too.
I always wonder how many hit those at 30 knots or more.

A waterman down on the Gulf, said to me, be careful running into the oyster beds, the oyster boats use old crankshafts as anchors and they frequently get broken off. "Your hull can survive running into an oyster bed, it CAN'T survive running into a crankshaft!"

Dredging a channel can be pretty hard on your boat....;)

We too have a general rule of thumb. Don't go where the birds are standing:p

Crab pots can be great markers. For one thing, the crabbers usually set them in the natural channels, so you can follow the floats in unmarked areas (but pay attention to being on the leeward side). The tops show if there is 18" of water or less, a depth I can handle.

And I am always eternally grateful that I boat in sand and mud, where few mistakes are permanent! But good point on the oyster rocks--and don't run inflatables near them, either.
