So I decided to replace the impeller since the last owner was an idiot. When I bought the boat (2007 Bayliner 175, 3.0 merc) I knew it had water in the oil. I figured it was a cracked block. After disassembly it turned out to be the head. I got a new head and the whole bottem end rebuilt, and just put it back in tonight. Then I took apart the outdrive for the first time and found this!
What the he'll is that? It's rubber with a metal backing, one piece has an indent you might be able to see. I found it just laying next to the impeller casing when I first pulled the upper off.
The rest of the drive looks great minus the water inlet guide pipe. It looked overheated/melted. Forgot to take a pic.
Any ideas before I put it back together?
