This is definitely a rookie question.

Taking the boat for the first time, I believe I put the prop through the mud. Everything seemed ok as I left dock, but when into open water, I only was able to push a lot of water, couldn't plane, with a max speed of about 5-7mph. The previous trip for a test drive, we made it to 52mph. The engine didnt seem to be over-reving. Could I have spun a prop? (200hp merc v8, 21 Wellcraft CC). We were able to move forward and back, just at severly limited speeds.

How does the prop look?A spun hub the motor would over rev and no speed.
If the motor is laboring You may not be on all cylinders.Could be as simple as a couple of plug wires off.You wouldn't be the first to not realize a motor was missing on one or more cylinders,especially an 8.Could also be a throttle problem.Could be a fuel delivery problem.
