So I just changed the impeller on a 1982 Mercury outboard 2 stroke electric start.
I felt confident that I could do this, after having done it on my other boat with the mercruiser alpha 1 gen 1 out drive, BUT here is my issue. I started off by shifting into drive before I started disassembling anything. I was able to change the impeller, but after putting everything back together, I am only able to spin the prop CLOCKWISE and it makes a weird clicking sound.
If I shift into neutral, the prop spins freely both ways.
BUT, if I shift into REVERSE the prop wont spin either way. I tried searching the vids on you tube but came up empty. can you guys please help me out.
in the mean time, I'm going to bed, I just got off of work a few hours ago from a graveyard shift and i'm beat, but I will read your responses in a few hours.
thanks in advance
ps. I read somewhere you shouldn't start with the gear in drive, is this part of what I did wrong?
