Every time I put my boat in the water (y2k 1900 Maxum w/ 4.3L 190hp Merc w/ Alpha I gen 2) I see a little slick of oil or gas. Any suggestions on what this could come from? When I have my boat in the drive way I don't see any thing dripping on residue on the ground.

Thanks,

Ayuh,.... It's probably gas from the exhaust, as the factory carb settin's tend to be on the Rich side...

Ah, I was wondering about that as well. Would adjusting the carb make my boat a little more efficient? I noticed this past year my boat would do dieseling every so often.

Though you're probably right about it being fuel related, also check your 4 drive side trim hoses for a little leak or the fluid tank looking milky. On my 2005 Maxum after I first bought it in 2010 I saw something similar in the water that did not show up when I ran it in the driveway but turned out to be a hose with a small leak but unless it was under pressure being exercised, you could not see the leak.

One clue is to see your trim and tilt fluid lowering.

I haven't seen any evidence of lowering fluid level than the current level. I am thinking the leak might be from gas.

I did not either as the water was getting in and simply looking at the tank level seemed fine but when I actually took the cover off and siphoned out some fluid, right away I knew water was in the system.

Well I guess it is a good thing water and oil don't mix. That will make it easier to tell

I took my boat out of storage on Saturday. I looked at the LU resivour and it looked about 1"-1/2" less than what I previously remembered. Also the guy who owns the storage place says my boat smells like it might be leaking gas, when we removed the cockpit cover. I have so many little things I need to do on my boat :-\

My slick was from my raw water cooled oil cooler. It steadily got worse and worse. I was loosing more and more oil and wondering where it was going until I noticed a slick behind me all the time.

it also could be bearing grease on the trailer if launching is the only time you see it.

I know this is an old thread, though I wanted to update it. I change my Lower Unit oil and I put new gaskets on the drain screws. I haven't seen any slick the past two times I have been out. I will keep an eye on my resivour
