What causes loud shifting into reverse but not into forward?

For the SX drives, specifically the sx-a drives, what can cause this? My idle speed is 700 in neutral, new TFXtreme shift and throttle cables, adjusted several times to ensure correct fitting. Cable fully extends bellcrank into both forward and reverse settings. Shifting into forward is seamless and quiet. Shifting into reverse gives a thug and is much more noticeable. I've never dove into the gearing of an outdrive before so I'm trying to understand what can cause this into reverse only. 2nd owner with no maintenance history, 2007 SX-A 1.60 ratio.

Shift clutch worn more on fwd side might cause this.

Is this something that can be visually checked without taking the entire upper gearbox apart? I know the service manual talks about removing the cone clutch but I'm not sure what to even look for.

If there is no operational problem I would not mess with it.

I try to stay on top of preventative maintenance because I'd rather fix something over the off season than have it cause major trouble on the water later. It engages fine, no grinding or performance issues. It's just much more pronounced than going into forward.

I replaced the prop earlier this year with a brand new one with a new hub kit. All is tight and there is no slipping.
