Re: what causes a stator to go out
Yes, the timing light for your car will work. Before you start throwing parts at it, it would be a good idea to check things out first. The rectifier can be easily checked with a digital volt meter in diode mode. It is a full diode bridge with four terminals, the fourth being ground against the block. Was the last stator damaged by the flywheel?
If you don't have a manual, you need to get one. It saves a lot of incorrect guesswork. The real manual is best, but the Clymers is much better than nothing. You need to follow the correct procedure for your motor before setting the linkages and timing. If you don't you'll be looking for a new motor soon. Getting the timing set wrong will destroy a motor fast. Not sure about this motor, but my 78 70hp requires a dial indiator on the top piston to set the timing pointer in the right place, before you set the timing. I'm glad I checked mine before setting the timing because the pointer was off several degrees when I bought the motor. Fortunately, the previous owner also set the timing wrong, but on the safe side. It just didn't run as well as it does now.
