Hello all -

<Originally posted under saltwater - figured I'd see what answers I get from the sweetwater crowd...)

I am looking to purchase a castnet, and just want to see what everyone else's opinions are, before I plunk sown a chunk o' change. I've used the Betts in a 5' size, & am thinking about moving up to the Excalibur gold series in either 6' or 8'. It's primarily for salt water baitfish in the 4" to 10" range.

Any ideas/ advice?

Thanks,
Matt M

I went for the 8' and was sorry I did. Right before I bought it, another fisherman let me throw his 5' net, and it was pretty easy to throw with just a little practice. When I to the tackle shop they had three sizes, I thought bigger is better, right? Wrong. I still can't throw it worth a crap. Go for the 5'.

i agree with racer. i throw and 8 footer but i use my teeth. if i don't use my teeth i can only throw a 5 footer. my teeth are like an extra hand. you have to learn when to open your mouth or you leave lead residue in your mouth.

Find a tidal current weedbed and spread the net below the surface with some fish meat tied in it. Get right next to the bed and at the upstream edge. Let them come in and yank them up. Don't go down to crab depth, baitfish come up fast.

In AZ 4' is the max legal radius so that's what I have. Its pretty easy to throw.

Get a "Betts" blue net. Good net for the money. I use them every year for shrimp baiting. They make several sizes.
