Its on a boat i got on a trade, Looking for alittle info on it, i ran out of daylight so i couldn't get the number off the power head, Also on the controls i didn't see anything for the tilt and trim but it has two wires coming out the T&T but isn't hooked up to anything i would really like to lower the engine but i don't know what wire does what. Both wires looked the same color. Can i just ground one and supply 12V+ to the other to get it to lower?

Like Racer said - Don't hook up any wires. That type of TnT doesn't have any wires except for a trim limit switch on the side of the motor. There should be a pump under the splashwell with the hoses connected to the trim cylinders. Slow down and get a few more pictures, along with the serial number.

It does appear to have the hydraulic cylinders for trim/tilt.

In picture #2 of post #4, you will see a small lever which is riding against the transom bracket. Lift up on the bottom of the motor and rotate that lever and see if the engine will lower all the way down.

from the first pic the hoses are missing , the trim pump under the motor well may also be missing in which case means no power trim.there should be a three button panel on the dash to run the tilt/trim,is it missing as well.

Re: What can you tell me about this 850? Tilt and trim?

If you don't mind me asking - What wires? In post #4, pic 1, I see something fuzzy, shredded under the steering cable - Are those the wires? And if so, where to they lead? What serial number is on the plate to the right of the fuzz?

I'm starting to think you have a bunch of parts put together. The remote doesn't have any TnT related switches on it. Any switches on the dash?

It doesn't have power t&t i can lower the unit, As for the wires, post #4 photo #1 there is two wires and the rest of the fuzz is just insulation and it leads into that behind the steering,

It has the hydraulic cylinders for power trim / tilt.----Obviously they are empty of oil and they move easily.----------As posted before , do you have a pump / motor / reservoir assembly inside the boat ?--Do you have a panel with 3 push buttons on the boat ?

The Serial # is 4298229, I haven't notice anything in the back of the boat but wires and the battery.

Re: What can you tell me about this 850? Tilt and trim?

That s/n comes up as:

85 850 4-cyl 4092965 4366801 1975 USA

Parts List:

MERC 850 (4 CYLINDER) - Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. Parts Lookup

That engine did not begin life with any PTT but it did have shock absorbers seen as item 30 under CLAMP BRACKET AND REVERSE LOCK

Here is a picture of a shock absorber from Ebay. Does this look like yours?

58780A 2 Shock Absorber Mercury | eBay

As for the two wires you are referring to, can you not follow them back to their source and let us know where they go?

Re: What can you tell me about this 850? Tilt and trim?

Is there a stamped number about where the red outline is? That's another place some Mercs of this vintage have the serial number. I'm thinking you have a TnT clamp swivel on a motor that didn't have TnT. The cylinders are for TnT, but no tubes/hoses. Also, stand back when you take pix. We're trying to find stuff and a fuse panel has nothing to do with it.

That baby was run hard and put away wet.

From the look of the rust on the exhaust cover, there may be some internal damage. Will she turn over with the spark plugs (4 of them) removed?

Anybody else see the hole drilled into the midsection on the port side just above the A-V plate? Was that a Dry stack attempt? Also the quick-disconnect plug is gone, and the wiring cobbled together.

I saw the hole in the mid. But I figured it was the least of the worries with this one.

Probably runs like a champ.

I hope there is not much invested in this boat and motor.---Sure looks like a challenge to make it reliable.---Motor is from the 1972 /1975 era.--Looks like exposure to some salt water too.

Re: What can you tell me about this 850? Tilt and trim?

What i was trying to show was there was no switches just a fuse panel, controls, wires and engine.
We're trying to find stuff and a fuse panel has nothing to do with it.

As for the boat i don't have much into it, i got it for a project because i am a sucker for tri-hulls but mostly with a I/O, But this one for the price i couldn't pass up. $250 is all i got in it i basically traded one project for another the other being a 86 Honda fourtrax 200sx needing a cdi box. I knew with it being atleast 30-40yo it would need work and i don't shy away from work like some people, I like to work on what i get that is how i make it my own that is why i could never own something new.

Ummm unless there is a 4th plug hidden this is a 3-cyl, This is the numbers off the head, 1021-3514
