I have a 24 ft larson, i m just about done sanding it down I was wondering what bottom paint should I use. Most of the time its siting at my dock but often on weekends ill put it out n trailer it to catawaba island to put in and head to put in bay and save on gas. I sanded it down to the gel coat and hulls in excelent condition. I don't wana do this again for a few years so should I barrier coat it with something first? What? Then botom coat?wat kind? How many coats?how much do u assume I should buy???...I'm like everyone else so I need to go cheap but effective...thanks to all for you help in the previous posts

Barrior paint protects from hull blistering and acts as primer for antifouling paint. There are non-barrier paint primers for Antifouling, as well. Since you really should use a primer under the antifouling paint, I recommend a barrier coat, just in case your hull is suceptable to blisters. The price is a bit more and the work is a bit more, but if you get blisters, you will hate yourself, because you will need to start all over again stripping the hull bare.

I recommend you do some research and pick a barrier coat that requires the least number of coats. Some require 6+ coats, some only 3 coats. Since barrier coats are usually epoxy, and temperature affects their cure time, you need to recoat at the correct time based upon ambient temperature.

After you apply the last coat of barrier, wait the prescribed time and then roll on the first coat of antifouling. You need 2 coats of AF paint, and if you use an ablative AF paint, you will get 2 years or maybe 3 years out of it, before reapplication is necessary.

Any major brand (Pettit, Interlux) of Barrier coat and Ablative AF paint is fine. I usually use the West Marine brand since it is a bit cheaper and the same stuff as one of the major brands...

^^^^^^ +1. What Chris said especially since you keep it in the water most of the season. Ablative AFs work well and if properly applied and maintained, significantly reduce paint build up on the bottom.

Figure out what brand (Interlux Petit etc) you want to use and call them. They will tell you application procedure and how much you need. For sure you should use barrier coat as this will help prevent osmosis.There is really nothing cheap at your point of application. After this it won't be to bad.I have a 30' and it cost me $700.00 two years ago for Interlux barrier coat and bottom pain. The barrier coat is costly.I used two gallons of barrier coat and four gallons of bottom paint.

I like to tint my first coat of AF. When your top coats are thinning or gone it will be a easy spotted visual clue it's time for a re-coat.

What these guys said only thing I will add is make sure you go with a good brand of bottom paint with a high copper content.

No such thing as a high copper content anymore.The EPA took care of that. The only ones allowed are the Coast Gaurd and Military.Boats/Ships.
