Have begun using my iPad as an additional aid while boating and am finding it very helpful. I am wondering who else is using it and with what applications?
I currently use Boat US's app, a float plan, knot guide, etc.

Navionics chartplotting (although, I'm running it on Android).

Might want to move this over to electronics.

+1 on the Navionics. It's my backup GPS if ever I had a problem with my main unit in the boat.

I've used iNavx with Navionics charts. Very nice app. You can other software on your PC to generate routes and upload them to the iphone/ipad app (usually in gpx format). Nice high resolution contoured maps.

I love Navonics, I have it on my iphone though a list would follow:

The Weather Channel - (great for showing you radar images) (free)
Navonics - Chart plotter, gives you marina info/phone numbers, etc. ($10-15)
Speedometer - Good ol GPS speedometer (free)
Pandora - Great for streaming music to your iphone (free)
Zillow - See how much that beautiful house is worth (free)
Gas Prices - If you are purchasing $140 in gas, it might be a good idea to find out the cheapest place if you trailer (free)

I have iNavX and Marine Charts on my iPhone.

I like Marine Charts much better than iNavX. Kind of regret spending the $50 on iNavX, though you can buy more charts for it through a 3rd party, something like eXtreme.

I bought a Garmin to use with the Garmin Blue Chart v2 Vision chip, especially for the "auto route" type feature through tough, rocky areas on Lake Huron. Have my iPhone, going to upgrade to an iPad as a supplement for the Garnin.

Thanks for the feedback. It will be interesting to see how this thread grows as I think these smart devices will have a larger and larger role in boating. especially is a more standards based approach to device communication is adopted.
Here is more details on the ones i use today:
Compass HD - Free - Simple backup to ensure my marine instruments are still accurate.
BoatUS - Free - A must have for any Boat US customers
Knots Guide - Free - Great tool for my kids to learn how to tie correct knots
Float Plan - Free - Ok app for sending an electronic float plan for your trip.

I want to get a suction cup mount for my iphone so I can use it more of a plotter. I also want to attach a ipod cable to my stereo for charging, control, and music. I might get a new stereo, since my current one has an ipod option, though it will only work with gen 1 ipods.

Float Plan Review - I am giving the float plan a try, it seems very very basic. It saves your details that you input i.e. boat and your info and it saves email address for the plan. Though if you are making a plan and someone calls you u have to restart. When you submit the plan it copies all your saved data regarding your boat and puts it in an email with the plan and emails it to the people you listed in your details. It is free, though TBH it might be better just sending you family a text that you are going on the boat. If it had FB integration, it would be much better imho.

Have you looked at SeaSucker? They make a great suction cup that I would trust holding expensive gear.

I used a free app called Dashboard to check the top speed of a boat against what the guy said it would do when I got a water trial.

I use Motion X GPS app on the I-phone. As I recall it was 9.95. Pretty cool as a back up GPS with a "track recorder". Each "track" tells the current speed, average speed, top speed among other things. Only annoying thing is that it "speaks" and tells you current speed, time, distance traveled every minute and the woman's voice annoys me!!

I use loopd too, if your friends have it and you are all signed it it puts a pushpin on Google maps, super nice to find anchored friends that leave at different times for raft ups.

Re: What Boating iPad or iPhone apps do you use?

This past weekend my wife and I started using the Simple Charts app on our iPhone and iPad. It seems to be a great app the charts are very detailed and the positioning is quite accurate. I would highly recommend downloading the app, especially at the $9.99 price it is currently going for, well worth the download.
