What Battery to use

I have a 75 hp merc. outboard. I want to know what the best series battery to use on it is. Besides engine cranking and running I have a radio that I will be using on it. Also what brand is best. The boat had a everstart when i bought it but it was totally dead and will not charge.

you should use a marine starting battery, this can support both starting and your deep cycle needs (stereo, lights, etc)

what brands.. personal interest..

Optima are great batteries, but pricey. Personally I go with the Everstart... they are relatively cheap, and they have a good refund/exchange value at WalMart.

I have drained too many batteries (which kills them) to spend too much money on my batteries. They are disposable parts to the boat, I don't cry much if I have to replace them every 3-4 years.

With an outboard, you don't need a starting batterry. Get a deep discharge. I use deep discharge starting a 454 with no problem so an outboard is a piece of cake.

You also don't need to spend large sums of money on batteries. I've used batteries (deep cycle and starting) from local farm stores (Fleet Farm etc.) and have had excellent service. Prices are also much less than marine outlets and sporting goods stores like Cabela's and Bass Pro.

I just picked up a Everstart Cranking/Deep cycle for 65 bucks. Ill let ya know how it works.
