My motor: Johnson 88 Special with stock unregulated charging system
CDI guys said DONT use a store branded battery like one from a box store like Wal Mart. He said the unregulated charging can bring those batteries up over 19 volts and that will damage rectifier or other ignition parts. He wouldnt recommend any one specific but said to stay away from store branded ones. Whats that leave Optima, Interstate, Dia Hard(would that not be a box store brand, Sears?)?
At present I have a Wal Mart Ever Start 24 and will look into upgrading just wondering what others think

Re: What battery are you using?

Its been years since I've dealt with batteries but, theres three companies that make wet cell batteries. Only difference between them is the case design and stickers. Granted there is a difference between a 500CCA battery and a 900CCA but they're all coming out of the same three companies factories.

Unless you have a shed load of power hungry equipment that will require power while the engine is not running a standard non sealed ( so you can top it up if necessary) flooded lead acid automotive starter battery of any make would be my suggestion.
Avoid sealed ones and Gel batteries.

I don't have electric starting but I need to run VHF RT, Auto pilot and lights at night while under sail without the engine running so I have a leisure battery but there is probably no advantage over a starter battery.

Most important is to never leave the battery even partly discharged. I have a solar panel permanently mounted to recharge mine.

Re: What battery are you using?

Thanks for the help. But I think the advice from CDI was that the unregulated charging system on my motor will cook a battery if your not careful. I think I'll research it some more and probably invest in a regulator to manage the charging. Anyone know the part number for a 1996 Evinrude/Johnson 88 Special voltage regulator? cant find it myself because it wasnt offered with one. Anyone know a substitute part number or specific rectifier/regulator that will work with the 3/9 amp Johnson charging system?

There are lot different ways to do this but you could go to a BRP dlr and get a 173640 regulator kit. It used to work just fine on these unregulated system.

Re: What battery are you using?

this is no problem...I use Interstate deepcycle batteries. the last 2 lasted more than 5 years apiece.

Sure, all batteries are made at the same factory, but they don't all come from the same production run, so they aren't the same, and the differences are more than just color and label.

Each distributor selects from various characteristics (grade of materials, quality control, etc.) depending on what level of quality they want to put their label on, and the factory sets up for that production run accordingly.
