What are the "oil seals" in a lower unit seal kit for and where do they go?

Hi all. About to tackle a lower unit re-seal job for my '61 QD-22 10 hp. I have the kit and I believe I know what bits go where, but I have two small, black o-rings of equal size listed in the kit (Sierra #18-2682) here at iboats as "oil seals" (#18-2022), but I'm not sure where they go in the LU. Also, I've seen and read that a special tool is needed to punch out the shift rod bushing. I was going to buy a " 5 Pc. Pin Punch Set". I also read that I need a "Seal Puller". Do I need any other special tools before i get started? Is there an alternative gasket sealer that can be used if I cant find the 3M 847? Thanks for any help.

I checked the kit and I got the wrong one :? No wonder the parts aren't jiving. I'll order another new kit. I'm still curious about the special tools, however. Thanks for any help.

If I recall correctly, the small/heavy O rings go on the shift shaft inside that bushing you are attempting to push out. No need to push that out unless it's corroded... get an O ring puller and yank the o rings out. Clean up the bushings with the same pick and grease it up before putting them back in. Should be an easy install.

Seal pullers are over rated in my estimation. Use a screw driver CAREFULLY and it does the same work of a $30-40 "special tool".

The two halfs go together after an Oring is sealed to the lower unit with a good rubber to metal adhesive. That's just a way to hold the O ring seal in place while you put it together. (Hint; go long on your Oring seal. That's a leak waiting to happen if you don't.) Use a quality silicone sealer if you can't find the 3M product and BE CAREFUL not to get the sealer inside the gear box.

I picked up my 3M 847 from Fastenal. I'd bet that Grainger, McMaster or any of the other industrial suppliers could get it. If you don't have one local, perhaps you could order through their website.

There should be two o-rings - the larger is the shift rod seal and it goes under the brass bushing which the shift rod passes through. Attached is a pic of the tool to remove the bushing. The small o-ring goes on the Phillips head pivot pin. Oh, forgot - there is a real large o-ring which goes around the propshaft seal bushing. I use Permatex #2 to seal the skeg to the lower unit - works fine for me.
