What Actually Gets Replaced on a Lower Unit Rebuild?

Can someone help me better understand what goes into a rebuild of the lower unit? It was rebuilt 4 seasons ago on my boat and I'm told that now is a good time to have it re-done. I've put 500+ hours on the boat since the last rebuild and haven't had any problems with the drive, which is an Alpha 1 w/ 5.7L engine. I've got no problem fixing it, but I'd like to make sure its actually necessary.

I had the drive oil changed last year and they told me there was no leaks or discoloration, but I've used it quite a bit since then in both fresh and salt water.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

On a rebuild, you replace anything that is worn out. Gears, bearings, etc. On a reseal, you just put in new seals.
If you aren't having problems with it, leave it alone.

Might want to make sure with the "I'm told" person exactly what he meant. He may have been referring to the raw water pump impeller that is on the lower unit. They should have a new impeller every other year.

When you say lower unit, do you mean just the lower or the whole outdrive?
