I ask as I generally steer away from jap motors to work on unless there the old Jap made Mariners of the 70 s- , I had a this 4 banger 4 stroke 50 yammy roll in suspected head gasket which it was, then bang four 25 yammys in a row come in 2 are hard starters, 2 been run hot potentially need rebuilds, I’ve had a real quick initiation with the yammys , the question begs to be asked are yammys crappy engines? They used to be good motors I thought, few fishos I’ve talked too said won’t touch them, what’s the general consensus of opinion bout them.

I like mine.
any motor that gets mistreated / neglected can have problems.
most are fuel problems with todays gas
follow recommended service and run the heck out of them

I got to ask what is fishos

One of the issues is factory / dealer support on older motors.-----Repair bills on 4 stroke motors can add up in a hurry.----Repairs on multi sensor computer motors can be very costly so a new motor quickly comes into the picture.

I've owned 4 Yamahas, a 4HP, a 40HP, a115, and now for 19 years a 90HP.....never a problem with any of them.....but it's mostly about the preventive maintenance. Yamaha outboards are the equal or better than most others, as far as I know.

Fishos are fisherman lol , the fifty Im doing supposedly owned by a marine mechanic seems a good motor easy enough to work on, he’d made some modifications here n there, few cut wires couple small hoses that’d been blocked with old bolts, a hose fitting so he didn’t need to use muffs, the fuel inlets a tad wierd he had a inboard fuel tank, regardless of all this crap not a total pig to work on, the 25 s I think have been used hard, 2 I’m sure are just needing a fuel system clean, like anything mechanical I guess if you don’t look after it it’s gonna let you down.

In South America fishos who have a very tight budget for spare parts and maintenance issues have a special affect and predilection for Yam Outboards compared to any other OB brand., they can install any spark plug with less or way more heat range than factory recommends along any car gear oil, the thicker from SAE 80-90 the better along other type of crazy add-on to make the engine work....
