I have a 1978 Sturey 14' with a 55 HP Chrysler outboard. I have removed the water soaked rotten floor. The stringers are fine (solid / not wet). However, the foam is water soaked. First, can I remove the foam and just leave it out? What would I need it for? Or, if I have to replace it, what should I use? Finaly, is there a way to dry the existing foam? I really hope to just remove it and leave it out. Let me know the pro's and con's of doing this.

Thanks for the help!

Hey Stringer,
The foam in the boat is for positive flotation in case the boat is submerged. If that doesn't bother you ,leave it out.The boat will go to the bottom for sure if it does become submerged. There are ways to put new foam back in the boat, but you should do some research before you do.It's a 2 part process.Once the flooris installed back in the boat and secured. You must drill holes in the floor approx. 2"id. to pour the foam "Its in a liquid form"the hole are for the foam to expand and relieve the pressure. If they are not placed correctly or enough of them it will blow the floor out of the boat and you will get to start over.If it were me I would leave it out keep a life jacket handy and roll on!good luck Keep us posted. Before you put the floor in, cut some styrofoam to fit under it. If its not a perfect fit, maybe use some 3M 5200 sealant to lock the pieces in place.

You could always pour the foam in before you instal the floor if you dont feel comfortable cutting the holes. Mix the foam in small batches of 16oz of each part (A&B). When you first mix the parts the mix will be milky. Stir until it turns dark, and pour into the cavity quickly. Word of caution....be in the boat during the mixing...once it changes color on a warm day it is a long way from the work bench to the boat...I know from experience !!! You can buy the marine foam parts at Clifford's fiberglass in Louisville, KY if you are in the area. A question off the subject; Do you think the casino in your area will alter the small town feeling of French Lick, West Baden?
@-@
JBR

Stringer,
If you pour the foam in the hull before you install the floor. You better know what the expansion rate will be.The foam will conture to floor and then rise of course. If you put too much you will have loafs of bread coming up and floor will never go in !Good luck and keep us posted.
Delta Breeze
