Re: West Bend Dolphin

I have never seen or heard of a WestBend Dolphin. West Bend's trademark logo was a "Golden Shark" and was used on all of their outboards except the 2 hp which was called the "Shrimp" At different times they also referred to their engines as "Tiger Sharks" and "Silver Sharks".

I have a 3.5hp Shrimp West Bend without any sharks or dolphins. It still runs quite well.

They didn't put the Shark logo on the Shrimp because they didn't want the Shrimp to become frightened :D

Baston, why do you care about this Dolphin thing? Are you looking for parts for it? If so all you need is the horsepower and the model number.

INTERNETOUTBOARDS, I call my shrimp my "gas powered egg beater". ;)

Dolphin = Canada......I don't have a clue. Back in the 50's and 60's information flow was limited to what you had in your area. I guess it's possible.

The only thing I remember about the Shrimp was that they used to smoke a lot. But that was with whatever the "cheap oil of the day" was back then. I'm surprised that there are any still running since there has not been any parts available for them for 30 years.

Re: West Bend Dolphin

Mine smokes no more than any other modern outboard engine. It's a little noisy but that's par for the course for an air cooled two stroke. It was our first engine that my dad bought used for $50.00 to put on our first "boat" (actually a 15 foot freighter canoe which we still have).

It hasn't been used much over the years. Let's just say we have upgraded to a few larger more comfortable boats to use now. :D

Re: West Bend Dolphin

I bought the Dolphin a few months ago and I was looking for any information on it. I have had it running and it runs well. When I get an outboard I like to get as much information on it as possible. (I am a bit of an information junkie ;) )

Thanks

John

Here's the only place I found for ignition parts:

http://www.laingsoutboards.com/newpage4.htm#WEST-BEND%20CHRYSLER%20FORCE%20Includes%20Elgin%20to%201959,%20Firestone%20from%201959,%20Wizard%20from1965,%20Sea%20King%20%20from%2019 64

If you ever find someone with other and more parts for Westbend, please let me know.

Here's a little history on Westbend:

http://www.westbend.com/westbend/catalog.cfm?dest=dir&linkon=section&linkid=16

...maybe Sears still has parts?
