I have a 93 Wellcraft 18' with a 88 90hp Merc with cable steering and was wondering if some one could tell me how much play the steering should or should not have. I currently have about 2 1/2 inches of play at the steering wheel before the engine starts to move. I've tried searching for other posts on this topic but found nothing on steering play. Also how would I go about rectifing this problem? Is there an adjustment or do I have to start replacing gears and if parts needed to be replaced where would be a godd place to look in my area. Thankyou in advance.

bcbob,

2 1/2" is too much. Look at your helm and determine if it is a rack or rotary type.

The rack systems can be replace relatively easy by replacing the cable.

I went to a website for surpluse Unlimited and bought a whole new helm and cable for about 140 bucks. If you buy just the cable it's only ten bucks cheaper. I guess what I'm saying is just replace the whole system and you won't have to worry about it. I have ZERO play. Go for the no feedback system. It's great.
