I finally took the boat out today. Even though i didnt get more then 30 feet from the launch area it still sat in the water and ran under power :D

Couple issues which i have resolved one

1. ( the steering was reversed. Never caught this until i got to the lake....got that fixed.)

2. i cant rev the engine over 2500 rpm. When i do the OMC 3.0 starts sputtering. Eventually shuts off if you dont cut the throttle back slightly. I think the carb needs replaced or rebuilt. Its a Rochester 2bbl. Boat is a 78 glassmaster with a OMC 3.0 and stringer drive.

anyone know what veh/car/truck carb will fit this? If i should rebuild it....is it just a standard rochester 2bbl rebuild kit?

NO, no, no, no, no! No auto carb. Did I mention no auto carb?

If you feel competent to rebuild it, write down the carb numbers and go to NAPA for the proper rebuild kit. While you are at it, double check your distributor, points, dwell and timing. Also double check the centrifugal weight timing advance. Make sure it's free of corrosion and can swing freely.

I'm sure others will add their .02 as well.

Possible KABOOM, void insurance, all that type of stuff. Marine engines use a marine carb. There are many other marine parts that you can swap with automotive ones, but not ignition or fuel system parts. Get your own carb rebuilt, and do not install an automotive carb onto your marine engine.

Have a great day, and a safe one,

Rob.

Regarding the carb you really only have two options: 1) Use a manual and rebuild it yourself or 2) Buy a new one. If you have someone else rebuild yours, you will find the cost will be very close to (sometimes more than!) buying a new one.

It's not that hard to rebuild a carb, but you must have certain things like the correct kit with ALL the "consumables", the resolve to get any parts you're missing instead of reusing something to get it done faster, the ability to soak the parts overnight (you can buy a can with a basket and solvent at most parts stores), compressed air to blow everything out, and some kind of instructions, preferably the fuel system manual for your engine.

Can't help with any of your problems but I reversed my steering once and only realized it after backing out of my slip.

Makes getting back to the dock with a wind very interesting.

That 2bbl rochester isn't hard to rebuild. Mine was the first carb I ever rebuilt and it came out good. Biggest thing to remember is to watch for where check balls may come from. Get a manual and kit. Only tools I remember using were a screwdriver, pliers, and the wrenches to get it off.

My Clymer manual covers the rebuild ok, but my local AutroZone had a book specific to Rochester carbs that was good too.
