Well more bumps along the way - Need Opinon?

Well got my lower unit on the motor, all full of gear oil and to my dismay, it would not shift, so I tore back into it and made sure the shift fork was set right, but still no shift, looking at the shift collar and the shift dog, it looks pretty beat up, so I figured I would post a couple of pictures of these two parts, to get an opinion if they are to beat up to be reliable:

Now when I place them together dry, they seem to rotate with no catching or binding, but there is a couple of small chips in the shift collar seats with the shift fork. Sitting the shift collar on the shift dog, shows very little side to side play, it pretty much fits. The motor is a 1961 big twin 40 #35023

Thanks for any help. Looks like not much fishing this weekend at least in the boat!.

I would clean 'em up a little bit with a small file and put 'em back in there. Take it easy when you try it out.

I fail to see any reason there for it not shifting. Could you be more specific? Are you saying it won't click into either gear? Or are you saying it won't go after it is clicked into gear? Can you shift it my manually pulling/pushing the shift rod up and down while off the motor? Are you turning the propeller while bench-test shifting?

Hi FR,

It was shifting on the bench, then when I placed it on the motor and got everything tightened down it would not shift, so I cleaned everything up with a light touch from a file, and put it back together, now it seems to be shifting on the bench again, when it is upside down, but when I turned it right side up, it seems to bind, I think I am just going to order some new parts for it, I am wondering if perhaps the shifter forks are out of spec, causing it to bind when orientated the correct way. These things are really pretty straight forward, so something has to be out of spec that is causing the problem..

Thanks.

Dave
