They knew something was wrong well before the shuttle blowed up.
Here you go. Read the whole story. It is scary.
memos

"Memos reveal debate on shuttle risk.
NASA releases memos showing engineers warned day before Columbia disaster that shuttle and crew could be lost."

That what I am talking about. They could have done something like this too and saved the seven lives instead of just letting them burn up. So sad to think about the familys of these fine people who gave it all for their country and the people that they had their trust in let them down.
Also heard a report that said that they were still alive about 2 minutes or so after it started to burn.
Man, what could have been going through their mind knowing that this was it.
P.S.
Why do you say that JB?
I just got back.

Spinner ol' Buddy... I don't mean to sound morbid, but lets just speculate for a moment and say, at 100,000 feet or less they could have somehow made it out... They are still traveling at somewhere way above the speed of sound...

I don't know, but I think it would not be possible for even the most physicaly fit human body to survive that kind of violent fall at those speeds even with all the gear to protect them...

True, Joseph Kittinger free fell from over 100,000 feet, but he was almost stationary when he jumped out of the baloon's basket and in the fall he just barely hit the speed of sound...

Unfortunately, I don't think there's anything that anyone could have done to spare the lives of the crew..

Space exploration is the most dangerous of buisnesses in which we lost the men in Apollo 1 who died durring a simple plugs out radio test while they were still on the ground... It is a highly likely and unfortunate fact that we will loose more people if we continue in this venture... I hate to say it this way but, That's the cost of doing buisness... :(

PS: I'm a huge NASA fan...

Re: WELL IF THIS AIN'T A CROCK

All I know is this.
If they have a back-up bail out plan as stated in the MSNBC report, and I quote,
They even considered instructing the crew to bail out
then that means that they have chutes to put on before they bail out, and I for one would rather take my chances with a chute than with a shuttle that is going to burn up and I know it says that the bail out plan is for a low, slow level bail out, but at 207,000 feet, I would still take my chance outside, and besides that, they knew it had damage from liftoff so why did they just bring it back down?
I guess thats why they get the big bucks, but man I sure would not want that on my mind, that I may have lead to the death of 7 people.
OK, I'm done.
Goodnight.
