welding broken cast piece

Guys, I'm new to this board and after reviewing see that there are lots of people willing to help out with guidance and I need some. I just bought a used Mariner 8hp LS for my 24' sailboat and it arrived in fine condition EXCEPT for a cast piece (or aluminum?) that broke off. The piece would normally hold the hand tiller in place where it rotates up and down, and would support that handle as you turn the motor. I've located a couple of welders and boatyards in my area that say they can probably fix it for $40-70, but wanted to see if anyone here had any tips or suggestions before I bring it in. Is something like JB Weld a bad idea? Thanks.

I think the strength required there calls for a hot weld with real alloy, Miles.

Good luck.
Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: welding broken cast piece

Thanks, J.B. I was able to come home early today and found out the piece was relatively small and I was able to get it off with a screwdriver. I'm headed to my local Mercury dealer to see if there's a replacement part available since I'd like to get that for long term solution. But I'll bring just the small piece to a welder tomorrow am.

BTW, name's Jeremy. Miles_Fan is used as in "fan of Miles Davis". Started using this moniker in chat rooms regarding music and eletronic equipment. ;)
