Hey all. I just bought a clean '59 Evinrude off Craigslist for my 16' Alumacraft. They didn't test in front of me but guarantee'd the motor for 60 days. I bought it, brought her home and threw her on the boat. It came with a plastic tank (single line) and the sellers had done the fuel pump conversion. It ran great for 5 - 10 min then when I went to troll she died on me. It then took forever to get it started and I had to row myself back in. I took the motor back to the sellers and told them of my woes. They then took it out a day or two later and said it ran great and they didn't have a single issue. So - I thought it was likely my old gas tank as I saw some sediment in the bottom and thought it may be clogging up the line.

A week later I got the motor back and went back out again after cleaning out the tank. They also gave me a tank with the motor and a new line BTW. Same thing happened. It's almost like it's not getting fuel. When I run it full out I don't seem to have any issues. Whenever I try and troll it will run for a min trolling but then die out. It then is very hard to start. Eventually it will start and run fine until I slow down and try and troll again.

Weird issue but it seems to happen on both tanks and almost acts like it's not getting gas.

Any idea's?

One thing to note... it seems like there are a few air bubbles in the fuel line. Not sure how normal that is but thought it was worth mentioning. Thx!

Just a guess. Did you open the tank vent?

Have you tried adjusting the low idle screw?

Your tale of woe fits bad (cracked) coils. Have they been checked? You can take a peek yourself. Remove the recoil starter, then the tin cover plate from the flywheel. You can see the coils through the inspection hole. If they are cracked or look dried out with little beads of plastic "sweat", they are garbage. And will cause just what you are describing.
