I picked up a Mirror Dinghy today for free. The owner included a weird anchor that he didn?t know anything about.

It looks like a basic mushroom anchor, but is made of plastic. It weighs nothing. The shank is hollow and unscrews from the base. It is 10? high and about 9.5? across at the base. The only name on the anchor is ?MOD. DEP.? I can?t imagine this weighing much even if the shank was filled with lead shot. Any ideas how this was used? Thanks.

They are designed for lead shot. At the cost of reloading supplies these days you could probably buy a new 25# anchor.

Other options include tying it around a tree or hooking it onto a nearby boat.

Re: Weird anchor

good one 22E. That's too funny.
Maybe you can fill it with gravel or sand when you use it and then empty it for transit--it could be useful for a kayak/canoe in that respect, to hold steady in light waters such as while fishing, but then not have to carry the weight when not in use. But certainly could not be relied upon to hold a boat of any size when it matters.

For convenience I use a way too small mushroom on a 21' boat just to slow or stop drift in shallows while fishing. So it might make a good second, or a beach anchor when buried on shore as long as there's a real anchor at the other end of the boat.
