Hi,
I built a minimax 8' hydroplane about 30 years ago that I used to power with a 1981 9.8hp 2 stroke, which was sold in 1993 and replaced with a 20hp. The 9.8 was perfect from a weight perspective and pushed this little boat to near 30mph!
I've since tried the 20hp on the minimax, and it's too heavy, when I stand in the boat and have someone hand me the motor to install it, the back end sinks.
I'm looking around for a replacement 9.8, but was wondering if the 1986+ 9.9 2-stroke that Mercury replaced the old 9.8's with would work, or if it's going to be too heavy as well. To help me figure that out, could someone tell me the dry-weights on all 3 of these motors (short-shaft versions)?
Many thanks
