Hey guys, great forum you here and it's already been good help searching through the archives and finding some needed info. I'm having trouble though finding some information on some motors for a mate. I don't have the serial #, but they are (he has 2 of them on his boat) Mercury 500, red band, 50hp, 4cyl, pull start, no electric trim / tilt, and he thinks they are a 77' model. What i'm wanting to find out is the weight and shaft length.

I went to a site mentioned in a thread I read, but as I didn't know exactly what model I was looking for I come up with somewhere between 165-175lb is that correct? As for shaft length, some sources seem to think that they are 15", however, we measured the transom and it seems that they must be 20". If anyone could clear these questions up for me, and give me the weight and shaft lengths, it would be appreciated, cheers.

Steve.

you are going to have to measure the motor, from where it sits on the transom to the plate above the prop. 16 inches is short 20 inches is long. you weight is pretty much right.

I have a 1968 Merc 500 (4 cyl 50hp 2 stroke) on a 15' open runabout. That motor was on my boat when I bought it. I always had concerns as the motor seemed to lack power with more than 1 person in the boat and cavitated badly in tighter turns. My suspicions were confirmed after reading this and measuring my boat and motor. The motor only has a 16" shaft while the transom to keel is 20". Guess I'm on the lookout for a new motor now..
