Weight of a small Jon boat and trailer? - Can I tow with a 1000 Lbs tow capacity?

Hey I was wondering if anyone knew the total weight of a small Jon boat, motor, and trailer? I am looking to buy my first boat and want to get a 12' Jon with a small 5 horsepower motor (or something close). I have a Jeep Wrangler 4 cylinder that has a 1000 pound towing capacity. I looked online and cant get any specific answers. Does anyone have any similar experience towing a small boat with a small engine Car/Truck? Thanks!

boat is most like about 100lbs trailer 200lbs and motor 40lbs. you'll be fine. and i can't help you on the experience part but the wrangler should be just fine.

Go for it. You'll barely feel the boat back there.

I used to tow a 12' Tracker Tadpole, trailer and 9.5 hp Evinrude Fisherman with an 89 Wrangler. It towed with no problems, I think the whole set up weighed just under 600 lbs. Just remember to set the e=brake if your by yourself. I made that mistake once, just once lol.

You'll be fine. I've seen fols tow similar rigs with hatchbacks. Just remember it's back there when you take corners and when you're going through intersections. Also, when backing up everything is double backwards, so it's normal :/ So turn the wheel in the direction you WANT the trailer to go, rather that the opposite, when backing of without a trailer. Also, you only need to make small adjustment when backing up. Take your time, go slow and have fun. Happy boating!

Yes. I tow a 13 foot Whaler, 40 hp, kicker fuel, cooler all of the time with a 6 cyl. car and a 4 cyl. hatchback.

How to weigh a boat.....

1. First put the scale under the tongue with the boat pulled all the way up on the trailer. For this example, we will use a scale reading of 100lbs so W1=100

2. Scoot the boat back on the trailer EXACTLY 12" so 12=X

3. Re-weigh the tongue. For this example, it was 50lbs so W2=50

4. Measure the distance in inches from the axle to the tip of the tongue. In this example, it was 150". so 150=C

5. Plug all 4 of your numbers into the equation. C(W1-W2)/X


In this example, it will look like this... 150(100-50)/12

6. Do the equation
a. first you subtract 50 from 100 which = 50
b. then you multiply 50 by 150 which= 7500
c. finally you divide 7500 by 12 which = 625

So for this example, the boat weighs 625lbs.
