1988 85hp - Would improper carb and timing adjustments cause the motor to act differently under different loads? If I put 2 or 3 people in the bow of my boat and give it throttle, it bogs down and wants to stall, put it in neutral and idles ok. If I have noone in the boat except myself and give it throttle, it will go ok but still does not run correct and fluctuate rpms when hitting waves. After running it like this (trying with one or two people and myself for about 1/2 hour) it then started to bog down on any throttle with just myself. I'm trying to figure out if this is a float problem, needle problem or adjustment issue. Leaning towards adjustment and worried maybe is set too lean since i don't think my mechanic adjusted the carbs in the water but did it on muffs. Any input from you guys would be appreciated. Thanks again. BTW just got a Clymer manual and it seems to be way better than the oem service manual.

Running in the water under a load is always the ultimate test. The problem you are describing seems to be lack of pulling power. Hopefully it's just an adjustment issue. Carbs could be adjusted either too lean, or too rich. Either way could cause your symptoms. Also need to check compression. Does squeezing the primer bulb help the bogging problem? Does it get hard after squeezing 4 or 5 times? Has the fuel pump diaphragm been replaced?

Thanks pnwboat. yes, compression is good - last time all three right around 125. I haven't tried squeezing the bulb while running it to see what happens yet but may be will give that a try. The bulb does get hard after squeezing and holding it so the arrow faces up. The fuel pump was recently rebuilt with new diaphram. This started after the carbs were rebuilt by me which didn't turn out so good, and my mechanic put a set of used carbs on my motor.

Do you still have the original carbs? If so, unless they were physically damaged, I would start with them.

Yes, unfortunately the shop still has them as I forgot to grab em. Will get them when I head back up to the lake next weekend. The mechanic first tried to get it running with the old carbs (the ones i rebuilt) but couldn't and could not figure out why.
