so, it would seem that my new (1994) islander is a bit light in the bow. does anyone know where the for/aft center of gravity should be located? Has anyone seen specs on this?
I am considering adding ballast to the bow to the tune of about 75 lbs.
anyone ever consider this too?
curious if the factory changes the c/g when going between the smaller and larger engines.
Of course if I add ballast i will remove that weight from the usefull load of the boat.

The cap'n.

my 1986 21 foot chieftain (similar to islander) with the 4 cylinder 140hp mercruiser has the same problem. I put all my lead fishing weight plus 2 passengers up front and one guy driving and one guy in the passenger seat next to the driver to get her to level out.
But I have a 25hp kicker on the back, but I have the spare gas can up front.

I have a 22 ft. Holiday and most of my gear is stored in the rear 200 hp outboard=9.9 merc 4 stroke . 8 downrigger weights- 2 scotty downriggers -35 gal fuel -and 3gal raw fuel for kicker. No problem with weight ballance I just trim the big motor and go like H---. The boat is a 1975. Plus 2 batterys and all this is under the splash area and the rear full width seat . Ed

Cap'n I would move my batteries up front ( make sure you put them in good battery boxes Vented outside the cabin ) Batteries are quite heavy especially Marine batteries this should move some ballast up front and remove it from the rear while not having to add extra ballast.

Make sure if you move the batteries you use big wire prevent too much voltage drop, make sure you vent the batteries, and make sure you protect your battery cable so it does not where through the insulation arc and cause a fire. Remember the battery cables are not protected via a fuse. A arc to the boat hull will burn like an arc welder. Big battery cable is expensive per foot and you will need a + and - cable. I have one battery in the back corner opposite the kicker motor and the other battery under the passenger seat (well ventilated to the outside air, cable is well protected) about 8' forward of the stern.

What about using the tilt an trim to balance out the boat? Probably not a good answer but more like a question.
