When I make my little jaunt down to the lovely state of LA, apparently I have to stop at weigh stations. This is what Penske told me.

How does this work? I've never done it before and I'm curious what happens. Do you just drive in, get weighed, talk to the copper, proceed on?

Enlighten me please! :D

Sean

depends on the station, at least when I was haulin grain.
Some you just pull onto the scale, if your good a green light comes on and away you go. Between Lincoln Ne and Omaha Ne they have weigh as you go stations. Get into the right lane of the interstate. If your overweight they will flag you in if not green lights. Don't even have to slow down for those. Others they come out or you go in to get weigh tickets and log book checks.

Ot find all roads around stations?

So, how do I know what I have to do when I pull up to the station? I'm hoping that they are patient. Is it possible to see weigh stations on a map?

Sean

ee what size truck are you running and what are you hauling.

If you are runninga rental truck and it aint over 24000 gross and you are just hauling your private stuff you don't have to stop.
To answer your question they have out side speakers so you can hear their instructions.

You are legal in the united states to drive any truck not over 26000# as long as you are not for hire.
I would go until they come out and stop me. They aren't likely to fine you.
The only thing I can think of for them telling you that is they might have thought that you were hauling for hire.

On the other hand if you are hauling tangeable products that are made by your company or some other company then yes you have to stop.
If it is your house hold goods then no.

im not sure but i thought the signs all say 6 wheels or over must stop. could be wrong but it would be worth the time to call DOT and ask just in case. good luck to you, looking forward to finding out myself.

I'm not hauling tangible products per se, just a bunch of furniture and stuff. Hmmm... I might call the DOT..

Sean

Weigh station protocol....

Don't cut anyone off!

Remove your ski mask and make sure your AK-47 is on SAFE. :)

Use ALL you fingers when you wave to people! ;)

Don't offer the Weigh Station Police a sip of your beer.... offer them a whole bottle. :D

That's about all I can think of!

Your hauling fore hire. your boss is paying you wages. CDL license required! They will wont to see your manifest of cargo Probably. Your option is YOU rent the truck and tell them Its your stuff
Household goods are exempt.

Laws change but thats my recollection.

Truck rental is in my name, paid for on the company credit card. I thought that the CDL had to do with weights and size rather than how you are transporting the equipment. I can't believe I would need a CDL to drive some desks from one state to another!!!

Sean

Furniture is tangible. Anything that has dimensions and mass is tangible.

Those Louisiana weigh stations have always been closed every time I've crossed the border. But you could just take the back roads.

"I've been from Tuscon to Tucumcari
Tehachapi to Tonapah
Driven every kind of rig that's ever been made
Now I driven the back roads so I wouldn't get weighed
And if you give me: weed, whites, and wine
and you show me a sign
I'll be willin', to be movin"

--Lowell George

as long as you are under 26000 lbs you dont need a cdl if you are hauling for hire you will need a log book and I beleive follow hours of service regulations and have a medical card. your best bet is to play ignorant if pulled over for not stopping at weigh station and if asked what you are hauling just say your furniture. you could go over to http://www.truckstopusa.com/ and ask the experts

C. W. McCall called them "swindle sheets"

If it is a rental van you wont have to stop, that aint gonna know you are hauling for hire.

P.S. DONT speed in Lousiana, they love to give out tickets. They will sit at the borders to catch out of state people. Some cops will require you to pay the fine on the spot or surrender your license.

Ken
