Hi folks, I've been away up north to a friends farm with my son.
We did our version of the 'big three', I won this year.
x1 75kg wild pig,
x2 10lb+ snapper caught off the rocks,
x2 local sheep dispatched, cleaned and packed for the freezer.
Time = 9hrs
My son had to help with the capture, killing and cleaning, and he learned a lot. He added to the tally with eels and rabits x2.
Everything we kill we must eat.
What a great weekend. There's food enough for the extended family for a couple of months roasts at least.
Again I re-learned the beauty of teaching your children to respect nature and take what you can use, to live with it and to share your good fortune!
As an addition we also cleared pest goats of a local womans property and the farm dogs have meat now to last a few months as well.
I have to catch up with the cup racing now, I don't even know if they raced on the weekend as there's no communication up there.
Ross

Re: Weekend away!

My boy took an 8 point, 276 lb. whitetail Saturday a week ago with his muzzle loader about 5:30 p.m. When he got back to the camp he was visibly upset. I asked what was wrong and he told me that he'd shot an 8 point and couldn't find it. We went back that night and picked up a bood trail but lost it in some water. With the weather as cool as it was I told him not to worry that he could go back the next morning and find him that the meat would still be good. He got up and left on his wheeler before dawn and came back around 10:30 grinning big. He said that he'd found him and he needed help loading him. I'm especially proud because he did it all on his own other than getting it loaded on the wheeler. He just turned 15 last week. He's not a little boy anymore.

Re: Weekend away!

That's great to hear, isn't it a good feeling to know you've passed on all the things taught to you by folk who've gone before?
When I think of my son doing that I wonder what my father and grandfather would say. I always come up with the same answer, "OK you provide the meat from now on". They'd be sooooo proud.
Ross
