This makes me sick

Medicaid Covers Viagra for Sex Offenders, Audit Reveals
New York State Comptroller Demands End to Practice
By MICHAEL VIRTANEN, AP

Getty Images
Viagra treats sexual dysfunction in men.

ALBANY, N.Y. (May 22) - Scores of convicted rapists and other high-risk sex offenders in New York have been getting Viagra paid by Medicaid for the last five years, the state's comptroller said Sunday.

Audits by Comptroller Alan Hevesi's office showed that between January 2000 and March 2005, 198 sex offenders in New York received Medicaid-reimbursed Viagra after their convictions. Those included crimes against children as young as 2 years old, he said.

Hevesi asked Michael Leavitt, secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, in a letter Sunday to ''take immediate action to ensure that sex offenders do not receive erectile dysfunction medication paid for by taxpayers.''

Talk About It

· Chat | Post Messages

A call to Leavitt's office was not immediately returned Sunday.

According to Hevesi, the problem is an unintended consequence of a 1998 directive from federal officials telling states that Medicaid prescription programs must include Viagra. His office discovered that the state was helping sex offenders pay for Viagra by checking Medicaid pharmacy expenditures against the state's sex offender registry.

New York's two senators said Sunday the problem should be corrected.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said in a statement that it was ''deeply disturbing and runs contrary to the purpose of Medicaid, which is to provide health care coverage for uninsured, low-income individuals.'' Clinton, a Democrat, urged Leavitt to look into the matter, and said she would explore legislative options.

New York's other senator, Democrat Chuck Schumer, said at a press conference in New York City that he hoped the issue could be resolved without a bill, but he's prepared to offer one if needed.

''While I believe that HHS did not do this intentionally, when the government pays for Viagra for sex offenders, it could well hurt many innocent people,'' he said.

New York auditors are reviewing whether other prescription drugs for sexual dysfunction are being reimbursed by Medicaid for convicted sex offenders, Hevesi spokesman David Neustadt said.

While the auditors didn't review the situation on Viagra reimbursement by Medicaid in other states, he said they have no indication that the policies are different elsewhere.

05-23-05 07:56EDT

This is typical....

Now let's spend 10 or 20 times the amount of money just to investigate this mess and tie up everyones time. Give it about a year or two to be resolved. Problems like this make me ill.

Think about the $$$$$$$ we spent chasing President Clinton without a resolution.

Want to save money.... shoot the politicians for a start...or the sex offenders better yet both groups!

By law, insurance companies are required to pay for services that most of us would consider optional or unneeded, or wrong.
Many of these coverages or their justification, fall into the mental health or quality of life areas. Government run programs are no different, they "have to be fair".

The biggest waste and example of this is the fertility treatments.
Insurance co is required to spend $$$ on fertility treatments, then has to spend $$$$ on 2-3-or 4 premie babies that need icu for 6 months, surgeries, and will have lifelong health problems.

SUpervisor from work has triplets in this situation, $1.6+ million has been spent so far. Feel sorry for the kids, only one is mentally 100%, all three are physically a mess.

A cousin had 4, 2 died.
Another cousin had 2.
Another co-worker had 2, one is messed up.

Never would have happened if the state didn't mandate coverage for the fertility treatments.

Premiums have to go up to cover the services.

The insurance co doesn't mind, afterall, they are making their percentage on a larger pie.

State governments dictate what treatments must be covered by insurance policies sold in their state. They won't let a company sell a long term stripped down policy.

Ever the embarrassment. Somebody in NY is going to be canned, and probably NOT the one responsible.
Hilary is very silent, that is first.

That is just wrong as a dog and a cat having relations.
Batsrds who rape kids should be killed anyway. There is no excuse for raping kids. especially as young as they are these days. Saw a news blurb the other day about some doo-doo head who raped a 4-month old. yes thats right 4 months. I heard about another (2 weeks) who was raped in the hospital. That is just sick. Ill stop now, but yall get the idea that this is repugnant to any civilized being.
