Just read a posting on how to take a wave. What is the difference between a wave and a wake? I always thought they were the same, just using the terminology depending on where you came from.

Re: waves or wakes?

Generally, waves are caused by wind and wakes are caused by boats. To many people they're just bumps in the water.

A wake is the region of recirculating flow immediately behind a moving solid body, caused by the flow of surrounding fluid around the body.

All wake is waves... But not all waves are wake. Dingbat gave a dictionary definition.

Wake is, simply put, a wave created by a moving object, such as a boat. A ripple in the water caused by touching the surface with your finger, is a tiny little wave. Waves are created by countless occurances. Wind, volcanic activity, tidal activity, glacial movement and decay, ect.

".....What is the difference between a wave and a wake?"

A wave is a female sailor.
A wake is a watch or vigil over a body, which, of course could be a wave.

How about - you have to wake before you can wave (unless of course you are a sleepwaver) :D

Re: waves or wakes?

The practical answer (not the definition) is that a wake generally consists of 1 - 3 "bumps" in the water, whereas waves are generally more continuous "bumps" in the water with no end in sight...

Man made the wake....Mother Nature made the wave.

For reals, a wake always has a twin, they are at slightly different approach angles too.

Re: waves or wakes?

so according to the definitions...

a wake is created by a solid body moving in water and a wave is caused by pretty much anything else.

so what happens if you are swimming in the water and you fart? do you create a wave-ake? or a wake-ave?

Think of it this way... Your on the hook in your favorite cove, just falling asleep when the boat begins to rock slightly. If it's waves, it helps you sleep... If it's wake, it pisses you off cuz some inconsiderate boater just shook your bed! Clear as mud?

If you're falling asleep and the boat starts rocking, someone on your boat is having a better time than you. :)

Go to the beach and watch the waves roll in, get out on the lake or river early in the morning, just after daylight, before all the boats and wind gets started, water is as smooth as glass, drop anchor, in a little bit a boat will come screaming by, then watch the wake come at you.

For the analogous of mind:

A wake is a type of wave, just as a beer is a type of drink.

Back when I was in the Navy I spent a lot of time riding the Waves.

A wave is something you take out on a date, a wake is what happens when your wife finds out ;)
