My 2000 model waverunner 800xl has been hard to start (cold) since day one. Now it' s difficult to start after a long hard run. Acts like vapor lock. Is that possible? Any other ideas besides plugs..I've tried that.

Re: Waverunner xl800

Myself and 4 other XL800 owners at my dock have the same problem.

We all keep a can of fog in storage compartments to help start the machines.

Pull the plug on the air vent, spray some fog in, and it will start right up.

Otherwise its a 10 minute ordeal to start them cold.

Fog is the same thing you use to fog the engines at the end of the year before putting them away for the winter.

Yamaha are hard starters for a fact. And they can be easily flooded - then you just kill the battery cranking.

My wife's Yamana SUV was one of these hard starter when it was new. However, with enough bitc_ing to the dealer he really had a solution. The choke was removed and a "primer" system was installed. Problem solved !!!

This system injects some raw fuel into the intake manifold for starting. I think these system cost a couple hundo to buy and install.

She now loves the modified SUV and can start it quickly after a few (4-6) pushes of the prime button. Our friend's newer Yamaha 800xl is still cranking when she is riding. :D

I second the primmer set up. All my friends ride Yammaha's and ALL have installed them for this very reason. It's quick, cheep, effective, and MUCH better than the choke is on a cold start too.

waverunners are bad hard crankers but the issue most of the time is pop off pressure set in the carbs from the factory.suv had a service notice to the dealers a few years back about hard starting SUV models lower the pop off pressure in carbs.yamaha's have very high pop pressure stock from factory this takes care of the hard starting probelm everytime

2 stroke engines need a lot of fuel to start cold but starting warm should not be an issue unless you have a leaking carb that floods the engine while it is sitting,, I had one do that . after you ride the ski and it is hard to start try holding the throttle half open when you hit the start button, be sure you are aimed in the correct direction lol.. if it starts easily your carb is flooding the engine,, usually rebuilding the carbs and fuel pump will solve the problem. also clean your power valves one may be sticking open,, that will make it difficult to start hot or cold
