Waverunner WOT issues

Hi everyone

I'm new to the boards and bought my waverunner this year. It's a 2006 Yamaha Waverunner VX Deluxe (4 stroke). Worked fine for a few weekends -- no issues at WOT, but then last weekend it was sluggish. In the water, I can only get 20MPH and 5000 RPM. MAXIMUM. The security or L-mode is not on. On land and out of the water it revs up to the 8000 RPM without issue. The intake grate is free of debris as well.:(

Looking for advice on what the problem(s) are and what I can do.

it sounds like you overfilled the oil in the engine and it soaked your air filter element,, check to see if it is oil soaked and then cry when you see what a new one costs.. never overfill the oil on those engines.

Thanks Jeff,

The oil level is fine and I have not added any oil. As I said it was fine for a few weekends, but then suddenly, no rush of power in the water. If I overfilled, would I also have problems out of the water on land? Is there anything else it could be? I don't think spark plugs or compression is an issue, because again, it winds up fine on land, but is sluggish in the water.

check the element any way because the person you purchased it from may have added oil and it takes a while to wet the air filter,, also yamaha 4 strokes are pretty funny about spark plugs people are swapping over to iridium plugs, you can not tell on the trailer,, there is no load on the engine nor back pressure in the exhaust.

Ok, you sold me. I'll check the filter. Also, since my last post, I did check the plugs. The one plug has some corrosion that the others don't. I'll have all the plugs replaced to be safe.

ok that alone could have done what you experienced,, a heads up on plugs for those engines,, be sure to coat the threads with grease or never seize. many people have had the threaded part of the plug break in the head when removing them as they corrode and lock in the head.
on the air filter if it is dry you are ok there,, but keep in mind that just a little extra oil will ruin it , so be carefull .

Re: Waverunner WOT issues

Ok, finally had a chance to take out the air filter. I found small stream of oil in the housing and the filter smells of oil as well. Looking at the replacement filters... or a RIVA VX power filter kit.

Any suggestion or difference between the 2?

Thanks for all your help Jeff
