My waverunner has been slowing down this summer. Top speed was 50/51 mph when new, but it is now maxing out at 38mph. Throttle seems to work normally up to 2/3 throttle, then it doesn't seem to make any difference how much additional throttle I give it. 65% and 100% throttle give the same acceleration and max speed.
I'm thinking that the problem is with the fuel system - the old gas might have left gunk inside which is constricting the fuel lines perhaps... I'm not a mechanic though, so I'm hoping someone else can give me more input.
Model - Yamaha SUV1200
Year - 2000
Specs - 4 seater, 130hp, 50/51 mph top speed, trim, reverse
Hours - 62
Storage - Original owner, stored in a garage until recently - it's now kept in the water during the summer months.
History
2001: First purchased. Top speed is 50/51, and I could easily pull slalom skiers out of the water. I got it up to 53 mph once, with a tailwind.
2004-2006: I went to BASIC and then Iraq. The waverunner sat in the garage for 3 summers without being used with a full tank of gas. When I got back, we drained the gas tank, replaced the spark plugs and battery, and oiled/greased most everything in the engine per the manual. It seemed to have lost a little bit of torque and stalled out a couple times when I gave it full throttle. We lost about 4mph off max speed (46/47mph).
Summer 2007: My sister ran over a ski rope. I spent about an hour cutting it out of the impeller. After that, power slowly decreased, down to about 42mph top speed.
Fall 2007: I ran aground in the mud. I cleaned it all out. Next time I ran it, top speed was about 38mph.
Winter 2007/2008: A mechanic worked on the waverunner and replaced the impeller, battery, plugs, and did a "tune up." He said the old impeller looked like it had sucked up a lot of crap (ski rope? mud?). The new impeller had more torque but a little less speed. When I ran the waverunner, the speed maxed out at about 47/48mph, 3mph slower than it was originally, but it did have a lot of torque again.
Summer 2008: Speed slowly decreased. Now, I'm down to about 38mph top speed again.
