waterspray?

Well I traded in the 25hp evinrude for a 25 hp johnson model 25R 74M. I bought it from a old outboard/ marina yard. Motor ran great when I checked it out in the barrel they had with water. Well I put it in the water tonite on boat and it started 2nd pull. Very happy with that.

Question about waterspray. I didn't think much water was coming out the exhaust like I've seen with my other motors. It seemed like a fine mist. Did get a little better but I did not run more than 5 min. I did have a lot of water coming out the exhaust holes on the shaft that face the back of the transom. Is this OK? Is it getting enough water?

Thanks.

Re: waterspray?

As long as it's pumping water you should be fine. You might need a new water pump in the future though.

If you don't have a maintenance history on that motor, change the impeller ASAP. They get hard and distorted sitting, it might pump a little but not enough to keep it cool enough .

I think I will take it back and have them put new impeller on. Why though is so much water pushing out the 2 exhaust holes facing the stern of the boat. Isn't that exhaust and the exhaust on the back of motor all connected?

Pull cord softly checking if compression is even ..johnsons can overheat often no worries = heat gasket but change it. thermoststat sticks open so not prob.

it is a 74 that does not have a taletell outlet. the water comes out the exhaust relief ports. on the back of the leg. it never hurts to change the impeller, also that old i would do the tstat and poppet relief.

The water mist won't start coming out of the exhaust relief ports under the lower cowl until the thermostat opens, so it could be a minute after you first start it up.....

Re: waterspray?

The holes facing the transom are drain holes to drain off the water that escapes from the pump housing where the drive shaft goes through. It is normal and intentional. However, there is a difference between a normal amount and excessive. An excessive amount is the result of a worn impeller and / or pump housing, especially the housing. There should not be any exhaust blowing out those holes, if there is, something is missing inside.

There should be a healthy spray out the exhaust relief holes in the rear any time the motor is running. On this motor you don't have to wait for the thermostat to open. The water should spray within the time it takes to pump the water through the system, only a few seconds.

I would say you should replace the complete water pump, not just the impeller.

You DO have it deep enough in the water, don't you?

at idle there should be a healthy wash of water out the exhaust holes. I find that a better indicator of w/p condition than the spray at fast rpms when everythings blowing out with a lot of exhaust gases.

Re: waterspray?

Thanks guys. I got to the ramp Sat. morning fired her up and had plenty of water coming out of the exhaust holes on back. I don't know what the deal was on Fri. when I just wanted to start it before the morning to make sure everything was a go. It ran absoulutly great and man is it fast. I check a few times while running at wot and plenty of water coming out. Went out today and everything was great! Starts very easy and idles great.

Here are some pics of it.
